Clean out the old stuff and fill with chassis grease to the plug level. The most important thing is to know the differences using the NGLI rating. Dimensionally, the design seems closer to a diesel than anything else, so a 3500-4000rpm redline is more in line with what I would expect. 1948 CJ2A 157713 24" Stretch "Old Ironsides". 1st Armored Div.Valve lash is specified at .014" in all MB & CJ2A manuals through at least 1947, and .014" is cast into every head through at least 1948 (I think it's cast into all 640161 CJ2A/3A castings). It lacks many CJ2A specific procedures, but is the most commonly available. There's also a 1948 and 1953 "Mechanics" manual, which has more CJ2A specific stuff, but omits details about the earliest CJ2As.The fuel line from the tank to the fuel pump is 5/16” and the vent line from the fuel pump is 1/4”. A 44S or 45S (S=extended tip [not to be confused with long reach]) would work as well, but may be more susceptible to oil fouling. The “R” signifies a resistor plug. Standard 30w, usually Valvoline brand, is what I use in most old engines with solid tappets like the flatheads. Pretty sure the M38 requires the 5/8-inch spacer to mount properly (ensures proper fuel pressure and volume). Pretty sure it also requires pre-loading the diapghram. Both procedures are covered in the M38 TM. As is troubleshooting and measuring the pump for proper pressure and volume. I assume you have the TM.The fuel line from the tank to the fuel pump is 5/16” and the vent line from the fuel pump is 1/4”. Hopefully the fittings on the tank will reflect the proper line sizes. FYI. Looks like I have (1) 1/4" and (2) 1/8" outlets. The 1/4" was plugged and the (2) 1/8" were return and feed.note where each plug wire goes, "o'clock" position, and pull them off. rotate distributor body exactly 180º so the oiler is uphill (as on the silver engine) RESET the timing in this position to be sure it's accurate. put the plug wires back in the SAME "o'clock" position they came from.
