Generally the best starters are Blazekin, Primarina, Greninja, Venusaur, Swampert, feraligator, infernape, empoleon, and incineroar. That being said none are needed to actually beat the game. As for whether you need competitive mons, it's possible without, but I'd recommend having a more serious team generally.
