Eye-catching features such as caves, sinkholes and spectacular skyline landscapes are often associated with limestone formations. These landforms have developed through the interaction of rocks, water and climate. Limestone, rock made of the calcium carbonate mineral known as calcite, can form in a variety of depositional environments, from hot spring deposits in lakes to coral reefs in the tropical oceans. Most limestone originates in shallow waters of tropical oceans, and may carry fossils of plants and animals that lived in those marine environments. This layer formed as a result of meteorite explosion on the Yucatán Peninsula in Mexico. The event marks the end of the Mesozoic Era and is associated with the mass extinction that also ended the reign of dinosaurs. Dark gray spots are chert nodules and the boulders on the coast are also made of this rock type.
