Geology Required Electives. 13. Students selecting this minor must complete a minimum of 13 hours in geology courses. GEOL 311 and GEOL 331 are recommended because they are necessary as prerequisites for many upper-division courses. Only one geology course fulfilling KU Core Goal 4 or 5 may count towards these 13 hours.M.S. students complete 24 course hours and 6 thesis hours over 2 years of study. Ph.D. students typically complete courses selected to support the research withing the Geology Department (student specific) as well as completing Research Skills and Responsible Scholarship courses outside the Geology Department (9 hours) over 4 years.
