As dawn broke on August 21, 1863, Quantrill’s 400 men entered what was then the outskirts of Lawrence, riding through South Park toward the Eldridge House at the foot of Massachusetts Street. At the corner of what is now 11th and Massachusetts, a squad went to the top of Mount Oread to watch for federal troops.
